Commemorating the events of Babi Yar

“Here in this transport,

I Eve,

With Abel my son

If you see my eldest

Cain son of Adam

Tell him, I...”

(Dan Pagis)

Alex Anski, Baruch Berliner, The Dumka Choir from the National Academy of Ukraine, Ukraine's National Orchestra, soloists and other musicians in a concert commemorating the events of Babi Yar.

On September 18th the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, under the direction of maestro Volodimir Sirenko, will hold a concert which will mark 75 years of brutal massacres at Babi Yar.

The concert is a Ukrainian-Israeli co-production.

The orchestra will play the following selections:

- “Abraham”, Symphonic Poem No.2 by Baruch Berliner

- “Cain and Abel” Chapter Four of Symphonic Poem No.1 by Baruch Berliner

- “Genesis” by Baruch Berliner

- In addition: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No.3 by Miroslav Skorik & “From Jewish folk songs” by Dmitri Shostakovich

The concert will be accompanied by “Dumka” choir from the National Academy of Ukraine. Soloist will be the famous Israeli actor Alex Anski as the Narrator. Other Soloists will be: the Israeli Pianist Maurice Tchernorudski and the Ukrainian singers Olga Fomichowah, Alla Pozniak and Sergi Pashtchuk.

“Cain and Abel” is the fourth part of the symphonic poem “Genesis” for orchestra and narrator.

Cain and Abel’s story symbolizes a universal struggle that accompanies humanity from ancient times to modern day; the conflict of union and separation.

Technologically Mankind has advanced in great leaps and bounds, and constantly presents itself with new far-reaching goals. However the human being, as a central entity of creation, has not changed even one bit; his emotions, internal power struggles and his maze like soul-searching have remained the same since the days of creation. As such, missing the mark, the momentum of purpose, leads then as now to a disconnection – an expulsion from heaven and chaos – a flood. The message which pervades the entire piece is the importance of the human being as the “Crown of Creation” and the power given to him to choose between good and evil.

“Abraham” is a symphonic poem for orchestra, narrator and choir. The piece describes the cradle of monotheistic faith and the Jewish people. Father-elect and his family call to the name of God and set out under his command to a fateful journey into the unknown. The travels of the Father of the Nation and his clan empower and enhance the internal and external voyage through fateful decisions that everyone, everywhere must face daily.

True to his faith, God makes a covenant with Abraham for generations and promises him to be the father of many nations.

Dr. Baruch Berliner was born in Israel and graduated from high school in Berlin. His higher education: a Masters degree in theoretical physics and a PhD in mathematics, he received from the University of Zurich. He worked as an actuary at the world’s largest reinsurance company, Swiss Re. After returning to Israel with his family he joined as a senior researcher at the Tel Aviv University Faculty of management.

Berliner published two books, on the subjects of insurance and finance math. Additionally he has published over seventy scientific articles and was a visiting professor at 20 universities around the world. He has studied the violin with the player and composer Mr. Eden Partosh and with musician and entrepreneur of education towards excellence, Mr. Nachum Slutzker.

The composing chapter of Dr. Berliner’s life began in 1968 after he completed his dissertation in mathematics. Since 2002 he composed seven pieces of music with ease and in 2004 began Dr. Berliner to write the symphonic poem “Genesis” followed by the Symphonic poem, “Abraham”.

Alongside the music Berliner wrote about 4,000 poems in Hebrew, German and English.
